AFCON 2019 BBC News Interactive Quiz

Project Brief

Design a fun interactive page for audiences looking for alternative content during the 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament, while still using the AFCON football frenzy as a peg to draw football fans as well.

User Needs

How might we provide an alternative news offering for audiences following the AFCON football tournament?

My Role

I developed the interactive by structuring the information in a format that football fans can relate to, mimicking the group match knockout schedule to pit countries against each other, based on the different categories being examined. Users are prompted to select categories from a dropdown menu, with the resulting information being visualised as an animated flowchart that creates drama, encouraging user engagement and stickiness. The interactive was published on 9 BBC language service websites including Arabic, Swahili, Afaan Oromo, Afrique, Hausa, Igbo, Pidgin, Somali and Yoruba.

Design Process

We conducted a competitive analysis on other news providers to determine the gaps in reporting on the AFCON tournament. We drew inspiration from the wsj.com project on 'The World Cup of Everything Else'. I proceeded to research on the different presentation formats used when reporting group match schedules in football.

We identified SuperSport, ESPN and Premier League websites as good examples of reference material for ideas on content structuring of sports data.

Findings

Many of the sports-specific websites were offering thorough coverage of the AFCON tournament. There was the possibility of news overload on the audiences.

Design Solution

I developed the interactive by using the recognisable knockout stage template in sports tournaments. We settled on a dropdown menu for the different categories to accommodate the mobile view.

Design deliverables included a user journey wireframes done in Sketch, a clickable prototype in Marvel, a handoff link on Marvel, UI assets and marketing assets.
