BBC News Africa Looted Treasure Quiz
Project Brief
Develop an information product that will present fun facts of artefacts looted from African countries, in a format that will capture the attention of younger audiences.

User Needs
Younger audiences in Africa respond to news content that is packaged in an innovative, relatable way.

My Role
This project was a collaboration between a team of journalists, an animator and a developer. I built on the concept of an ancient treasure map to develop an interactive quiz that takes the user on a journey through the African continent in search of ancient artefacts. I adopted a style that younger audiences could easily recognise and relate to. The interactive was published on several African BBC language service websites.

Design Process
We conducted a content analysis of previous BBC news products to assess how the content was packaged and the different formats used. We used primary and secondary research to understand audience needs and preferences. We then ran several brainstorming sessions to develop concepts and ideas.
Design Solution
We developed an immersive interactive game, with different mobile and website experiences to suit the platform. The treasure hunt concept and flat design style were used in order to resonate with the younger audiences. Two formats – full-width pages and an embedded interactive, were developed to cater for the younger audiences and the traditional BBC audience respectively. We also provided core content functionality to cater for users with limited browser capabilities or low bandwidth. Design deliverables included wireframes and prototypes done in Sketch and UI assets.
